The Top 5 Secrets to Losing Weight and Avoiding Sabotage

Do you sabotage yourself? It seems silly that you would sabotage yourself, doesn’t it? Why would you say that you want to achieve a goal and then do an action in direct opposition to that goal? This is what happens when you sabotage yourself. Nevertheless, don’t feel guilty if you have sabotaged yourself in the past. Sabotage is very sneaky. The bad news is that you don’t have anyone to blame but yourself when you sabotage your own weight loss. The good news is that this empowers you to take your health into our own hands. Most of us have sabotaged ourselves at one time or another, especially when it comes to losing weight. To avoid sabotaging your weight loss goal be aware that sabotage is possible, be on the look out for times that it is likely to occur, and have a plan in place to prevent it from happening.

How We Sabotage

“Why would I sabotage my own efforts? I wouldn’t want to hinder myself!” These might be common thoughts that go through your head. Sabotage is not always conscious. Some of the ways a weight loss endeavor can be sabotaged include eating an extra large piece of cake; not having healthy food available so that it is easy to grab what is convenience, quick, and not always healthy; going to a party really hungry so that it is more difficult to mindfully choose healthy foods; and making reasons up why you are not able to exercise. However, by being aware of the ways in which you can sabotage your weight loss goal, with preparation sabotage can be prevented more often.

5 Secrets to Prevent Sabotage

Here are 5 secrets that will set you up for weight loss success:

1. Have a specific plan for how you are going to lose the weight that you want to lose. This plan will outline the actions you will take, foods you will eat, and exercise you will engage in to reach your weight loss goal.

2. When you wake up in the morning, and throughout the day, rate yourself. Ask, “What percentage of me is totally committed to following my weight loss plan?” If there is a percentage that is not committed to following the plan, beware, for this could be the percentage that may sabotage your efforts.

3. Ask, “What do I need to do to commit myself 100% to my weight loss goal?” One way is to think of all of the benefits that you will experience by losing weight and then to write out these benefits. How will your life be improved? What new activities will you do? Will you go bike riding with friends or family members? Learn how to ski? Try out for the community theater? Make this list of benefits so strong and vivid that it becomes a strong foundation of support for you.

4. Have a plan of possible actions to take when you have the urge to sabotage your weight loss effort. Possible actions include: going for a walk, petting your cat, reading an article in a magazine, reviewing your weight loss benefits list, looking at a catalog for outfits that you might like to buy when you reach your desired goal weight, or calling a supportive friend. This will distract you from the urge to sabotage and help you realign with your goal.

5. Use a technique such as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), a mind/body therapy, to clear the tendency to sabotage yourself. Utilizing EFT with an experienced practitioner is a very effective for clearing limiting beliefs and assumptions. These can be the underlying emotional reasons why you sabotage yourself in the first place.
